The Encounter

As promised, Charles England stayed relatively invisible around the Maiden camp, and only spoke when he was spoken to. Through the natural course of events, he was friendly with Nicko McBrain’s drum tech, Steve, and I believe Nicko himself had instigated a friendly exchange with Charles a time or two. Other than that, I’m sure it was absolutely maddening for him to not have any dialogue with the other band members, especially bassist and leader Steve Harris, who he virtually idolized.

On our last night of the tour in El Paso, the Maiden camp invited the VVI camp back to their dressing room after the show for a little end-of-tour celebration. And since it was also guitarist Adrian Smith’s birthday, there would even be cake! We would drop by, of course.

Charles caught wind of this and pulled me aside.

“C’mon, man! Let me tag along and at least meet the band. I’ve kept an extremely low profile out here, as you know. I just want to meet them.”

Strum was within earshot.

“What do you think, Holmes?” I asked Dana.
